CAIRO Joey Votto Jersey , July 15 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian police killed four militants in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia on Saturday, confirming them as terrorists escaping from restive North Sinai, state-run Al-Ahram news website reported.
The raid was carried out after verifying their involvement in the recent assassination of one of Sinai's tribe chiefs, and receiving tipoff on their hideouts in a desert area in Ismailia, said the report.
The four terrorist elements opened fire at the police upon their approaching and were killed in exchange of fire, it added.
Four machine guns have been retrieved, but "nothing was found to identify them," the report said.
The raid came a day after a terrorist attack on a checkpoint in Giza killed five security men.
A similar security campaign was launched also in an Ismailia desert area last week, which killed 14 gunmen who have been wanted over involvement in terror operations targeting policemen and soldiers in North Sinai, bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
Egypt has been facing a rising wave of terrorist activities following the military removal of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule and his now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.
Terror attacks had been centered in restive North Sinai before they prevailed nationwide, killing hundreds of policemen and soldiers over the past few years.
On July 8, a car-bomb terrorist attack on a checkpoint in North Sinai's Rafah killed and wounded 26 soldiers, according to the Egyptian military spokesman, while the security forces killed at least 40 of the terrorists.
Terrorists have recently started to target the Coptic minority and their churches across the country via bombings that killed dozens of them since late December 2016.
Most of the terrorist operations were claimed by a Sinai-based group loyal to the regional Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian military in cooperation with the police killed hundreds of terrorists and arrested a similar number of suspects as part of the country's anti-terror war declared in 2013 by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who was then the army chief, following Morsi's removal.

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China has announced a 46-strong team to compete at the upcoming athletics world championships next month in London.
The Chinese Athletics Association released the roster on Wednesday, with top sprinter Su Bingtian, shot put medal hopeful Gong Lijiao and high jump star Zhang Guowei all included.
Although China's best world championships result in the men's 100m is a ninth place finish in the final by Su in 2015, the blue ribbon event remains a big attraction, not just because world and Olympic champion Usain Bolt will run his final worlds, but also because Su and Xie Zhenye will be challenging the Chinese record in the British capital.
Medal hopes will be pinned on women's shot put, race walk, long jump and triple jump.
Gong will be on her sixth trip to the world championships and a gold medal is her goal. Already with three wins in this season's IAAF Diamond League series, Gong has reason to be confident going into London.
Olympic champions Wang Zhen and Liu Hong will be missing from this year's competition, but Chinese race walkers still are strong competitors for the titles.
Beijing worlds runner-up Lyu Xiuzhi is presented with the best chance to move to the top of the podium in the absence of defending champion Liu while Wang Kaihua, a world championships rookie, will contend for the men's honor, coming to London with this year's world lead time of 1:17:54.
Rio Olympic bronze medalist Dong Bin will aim for a medal in the men's triple jump while Beijing worlds bronze medalist Wang Jianan will lead a three-man long jump charge this time.
High Jumper Zhang has been struggling with injuries since the Rio Olympics and is still in search of his best form, so a medal could be too high a bar for him this time.
BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed mixed Tuesday with nonferrous metal and steel sectors leading the decline.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.19 percent to close at 3,372.04. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.04 percent higher at 11,275.34.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 0.3 percent to close at 1,876.99.
Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 389.6 billion yuan (58.9billion U.S. dollars), down from 545.9 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Sectors including nonferrous metal and steel dragged down the Shanghai index with their sub-indices dropping 1.85 percent and 1.09 percent respectively.
Shandong Iron and Steel Company shed 2.05 percent to close at 2.39 yuan per share, and China Northern Rare Earth High-tech lost 2.6 percent to close at 14.98 yuan.
Bucking the trend, the sector related to housing rentals gained most with the sub-index rising 5.45 percent, as China is pushing development of the home rental market in large and medium cities to address rising rental demand from urban newcomers.
China is expected to release its first regulation on housing rentals soon, according to Xinhua-run Economic Information Daily Tuesday.
The regulation will list detailed rules that supervise market parti.
